Spokane Schools
District #81, Spokane Public Schools, is one that is working toward distinct and admirable goals. The focus is on the learning of every student, the collaboration of teachers as team members, and the creation of a system flexible enough to meet the needs of the unique students within each school. The district’s motto is “Excellence for Everyone,” meaning that your child will be given the attention and instruction that they need to succeed.
During the past years, success has been the story of schools in the district. In the past four years, three of Spokane Public School’s elementary schools were named National Blue Ribbon Schools. Additionally, Ferris and Lewis and Clark High Schools were named two of the top high schools by Newsweek. However, these accolades are will not stem the consistent drive to improve. During December of 2008, SPS recognized 27 new National Board Certified teachers; the number of National Board Certified teachers at Spokane Public Schools now totals 74.
Not only do Spokane schools excel in providing high quality academic opportunities, they also provide great extracurricular programs for students. From a nationally ranked softball team at Shadle High School to Ferris High School’s two national champions at the 2008 DECA tournament, as well as exceptional music programs, Spokane schools give students chances to learn, improve and share their talents.
Schools in the Spokane School District are looking to the future, both in their goals for learning and in other areas. Shadle Park High School is in the middle of a modernization project that includes much more than just remodeled classrooms. A new gym and new library are also part of the complete package. Shadle is only one of the area schools receiving money from a bond being used for school-by-school improvement projects district wide. Many of these projects will include the implementation of sustainable or “green” design.
